One of the elements of the Kings Speech that slipped through the net for many KBB businesses is that "Unfair Dismissal" will now become a day one right, rather than after two years of service.
"LABOUR PARTY REFORMS: UNFAIR DISMISSAL TO BECOME A DAY ONE RIGHT AND WORKERS TO OBTAIN FULL EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS"
Many companies, especially the national companies and a lot of the time, sales businesses have been using this to their advantage, rightly or wrongly.
The two year deadline is marked in a lot of HR calendars, where they know currently that if they have a member of staff who isn't performing, they can let them go with very little recourse.
This is all about to change.
This is a rule that is long overdue a change and should be welcomed warmly.
The employee now has rights from day one and this will force the hand of many companies to put proper induction programmes in place, as well as regular performance reviews, training, and development plans.
Giving the new starter the keys and telling them to get on with it is no longer an option.
So how prepared are you ?
What do you do currently ?
Each new starter should have a detailed induction plan to work through.
Recorded monthly reviews should take place for ALL staff, and should cover all elements of their performance, personal development and support within their role.
Hopefully, the new law will reduce the attrition rate of businesses, and give confidence to kitchen designers and other KBB staff who are starting a new role within the sector.
If you need support then please get in touch.
I can work with you to provide a framework for all new starters, and make your business professional, supportive and compliant !
Who knows, the companies that use the two year rule as a management tool might suddenly find that salespeople perform a lot better when there isn't the risk of constant termination hanging over them.
